The Way of the Cross: Down the Mountain
The mountaintop. Even if we have never been to the mountains before or have hiked to the summit of a mountain, we are familiar with the idea of a mountaintop experience. And with good reason! These are the experiences that our culture celebrates, that we use words for like “transcendent” or “once in a lifetime”
But what do these mountaintop experiences mean in our lives and our journey of faith? Why can’t we seem to make them last? As we continue our Lenten journey this Sunday, we’re going to discover in Mark 9:2-13 that as much as we’d like to make camp at the top of the mountain, the way of the cross takes us down the mountain into the mundane, the messiness of ordinary life, even to death but then ultimately to resurrection, to new life.
