Summer of Psalms: The Joy of Fear

What does it mean to "fear the LORD?" Are we to flinch before the God of the universe, terrified of his great power and wrath, or is it something else? In Psalm 34, David instructs us to fear the LORD but his instructions don't seem to be a burden, rather they seem life giving. What's more, in fearing the LORD, it seems that the rest of our fears come into perspective and we find we can live in the joy of the LORD, no matter what is happening around us.
