Advent: Week 2. A World Waits to be Born

Genesis 1:1-3, Luke 2:6-7, Colossians 1:15-17

I don't usually think of the creation during the season of Advent.  Advent is usually a time to think about angel announcements and improbable pregnancies.  But our scripture from Genesis holds the entire gospel story in a nutshell.  God is immediately proclaimed as the main actor, a shapeless void waits for a creative word, the Spirit hovers over the waiting darkness, a sign of hope, and finally by the power of God's speaking, a creation is born---and there is light!

I suggest that this scenario, and the tension it holds, continues to play out today in many different ways.  But our focus will be the longings, the hopes and the redemption of the creation itself.
