Mark 2:13-17 “What Kind of People?”

What qualities did Jesus look for when calling people to become his disciples? People who were well educated, intelligent, experienced, skilled, personable? When looking or hiring for a position these are qualities we assume are important. But that’s not how Jesus operated. During his ministry Jesus constantly upset the status quo and the calling of Levi is no exception. To the surprise and consternation of the religious leaders Jesus calls a tax collector to follow him; someone who was ceremonially unclean and seen as dishonest and greedy. Jesus’ explanation? “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
