Loving our Neighbours from Fort McMurray

fort-mcmurray-fire

Please let us continue to pray, that those displaced by the fires would experience God’s love, comfort, generosity and hospitality.

Let us also show our love as friends and neighbours in some practical ways. Avenue Church will be taking a love offering in addition to our regular offering. Money gathered will go to World Renew Disaster Relief Services. This organization serves as the development, disaster relief and justice arm of our denomination and has an incredible track record of helping communities rebuild over the long term. (Many of us had opportunity to work with them helping rebuild in High River after the floods).

If you would like to give online, please visit their website by clicking here. Donations are tax deductible.

Over the next few weeks, we will be gathering items at our Sunday gatherings to take to distribution sites. The current need is for:

  • Diapers and baby wipes
  • NEW toiletries (soap, shampoo, tampons, toothpaste, razors, deodorant, etc.)
  • NEW pillows
  • NEW shoes
  • Donations for the Food Bank
  • Pet food

Please stay tuned over the coming weeks as we find out how the needs change and how we may best be able to assist.

Avenue Church and Uganda

One of our congregation members is from Uganda. He recently shared with us an eye-opening and extremely troubling experience he had on his last visit back home. He discovered that there is a huge black hole in terms of awareness and care for children with developmental disabilities in Uganda. Because of persistent misunderstanding, superstition, and a lack of resources, many families of children with developmental and cognitive disabilities are unable to care for them. Tragically, many of these children are abandoned, neglected and left to starve.

Avenue Church is committed to loving its global neighbours. While we work to develop long term partnerships with people on both sides of the ocean, we invite you to help Pastor Wilber and the four children under his care in Kampala. On the Move!

As God has continued to bless and grow the ministry of Avenue Church, we have started to pray about the next gathering space God is sending us to. The Carrot Coffeehouse has been an incredible host to us for our first year and we are extremely grateful for everything they have done for us but the reality is that we are starting to outgrow it!

God has miraculously opened up an opportunity to stay in Alberta Avenue, just around the corner from the Carrot. Our new space is called The Studio and our new host is artist Glen Ronald! We are excited to not only be sharing space with Glen but are looking forward to exploring ways in which faith, art and community might collaborate in ways that honour God and grow us as disciples.

To see some of Glen’s incredible artwork, click here.

Our first service at the Studio will be Sunday, Oct. 11 at 10:30 AM. As always, coffee is on at 10! The new address is 11739 – 94 St.

Please pray as we transition to the new space. If you would like to help us with the move, have some old tables and chairs to offer or would like to sponsor us financially, please e-mail info@avenuechurch.ca

Baptism and Profession of Faith

As part of the Christian Reformed Church in North America, Avenue Church adheres to the understanding and practices set out by the CRC with regards to baptism and profession of faith.

Profession of Faith

“The Public Profession of Faith is a believer’s response to God’s extravagant love expressed through the cross and in baptism and is their opportunity to tell the world that they have examined their faith and are committing to follow Him! It is a significant rite of passage in the Christian journey, celebrating all that God has done and will continue to do in a believer’s life.” (from South Bend CRC)

Easter 2015

AC-4x6-Easter Postcard-V22

Avenue Church is celebrating the various aspects of Easter in a variety of ways. We hope you will be able to journey with us as we journey with Christ through this foundational season.

On Thursday, April 2, we will be celebrating Maundy Thursday with our friends at St. Faith’s Anglican Church (11725-93 St). This includes a Seder (Passover) Meal at 5:30, commemorating Jesus’ last supper with his disciples. The Maundy Thursday service will follow the meal in the sanctuary.

On Friday, April 3, we will be holding a Tenebrae Service at 7:30 as part of our Good Friday commemoration. This “Service of Shadows” follows Christ’s journey to the cross through Scripture, song and poetry. As the service proceeds, the space becomes darker until we are left in darkness to contemplate the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

On Sunday, April 5, we celebrate Resurrection Sunday at 10:30. We will have the opportunity to celebrate the hope and new life that Christ brings through his resurrection in community. Avenue Church Choir will be making its debut as well!

Both Friday and Sunday’s services will be held at the Carrot Coffeehouse (9351-118 Ave).

Sharing Sunday

Avenue Church is excited about its monthly practice called Sharing Sunday. Every second Sunday service of the month, we will share a potluck lunch as well as hear the Good News of Jesus shared through the stories of one another. Usually this will involve a testimony of a community member but can also happen around the table. Please bring your favourite dish or casserole to share with the community!

Time: Second Sunday of the month at 10:00 AM

Location: Parkdale Cromdale Community League (11335 86 St.)

Serving with St. Faith’s

Partner with us as we partner with St. Faith’s Anglican Church to serve and enjoy a meal with our neighbours in Alberta Avenue! This is an incredible way in which we can both share and receive Christ’s hospitality.

We meet every 3rd Friday of the month at St. Faith’s Anglican Church (11725-93 St.) beginning at 4:30. Clean-up is usually done by 7:30. In addition to serving the meal, you are encouraged to join the community in eating together so dinner is provided!
