A Community to Believe With
Avenue Church in Edmonton, Alberta belongs to a larger body of churches known as the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA). Our beliefs can be summarized in three creeds, written centuries ago and adopted by the worldwide church: they are the Apostle’s Creed, the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed. These three creeds attest to the reality and the mystery of the Trinity: that our God is one God in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – a perfect community of love.
God the Father, created us for fellowship with him but we became corrupted by our selfish and stubborn rebellion against him, choosing instead to try and master our own destinies. Because of this sin, we all were destined to eternal separation from our Creator.
But God, in his love and grace set in motion the greatest rescue mission of all time, sending his Son, Jesus Christ – fully God and fully man – to save us from our sin and to restore us to fellowship with God. This was accomplished through Jesus’ death and resurrection: Jesus who was without sin took our sin on him and paid the penalty we were owed of eternal death on the cross. He defeated that death by being raised on the third day and later ascending to heaven. The forgiveness that is given, the life that is transformed in the present and the hope that is granted for eternity is a gift of Jesus, it is his gift to us of grace – it is not earned. Jesus has promised to return to earth one day to bring fullness and completion to history and all those who have received his grace, will enjoy eternal fellowship with him.
Before ascending to heaven Jesus also promised that he would send us the Holy Spirit. It is this Spirit that draws us out of our self-reliance and selfishness to receive Jesus as Saviour and King and step into the life of forgiveness, freedom and purpose he invites us to. It is the same Spirit that equips people to serve God and serve others in a community called the church. The church exists to glorify God and to proclaim the Good News of God’s Kingdom, a kingdom defined by love, grace and justice.
